New York City College of Technology (City Tech) alumnus Larry R. Felix, a 1980 graduate of the college’s liberal arts program, greeted President Barack Obama at swearing-in ceremony for new US Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geitner. Felix was named director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing by former Treasury Secretary John W. Snow in January 2006.
An agency of the Department of the Treasury with facilities in Washington, DC, and Fort Worth, Texas, employing 2,500 people, the bureau produces all US paper currency and many other security documents, including 35 million notes a day with a face value of approximately $635 million. Its larger mission includes extensive efforts in the area of counterfeit deterrence.
Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Felix came to the US when he was a child and was raised in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. A Brooklyn Tech High School graduate, he worked at Irving Trust as a financial investigator the whole time he was a City Tech student in order to pay for college. He also holds a degree from City College of New York and has done doctoral work in political economy at Columbia University.
