Clean it up! Ridgites pitch in to clean up Shore Road Park

Ridgites spent the day on Friday pitching in to make Shore Road Park a better place.

Dozens of volunteers fanned out across several sections of the park to pull weeds, rake leaves and clean up a park that otherwise would have become overrun with unwanted plants.

“There are sections of the Shore Road Park that are just overrun by weeds,” said Charles Fasano, treasurer of the Shore Road Parks Conservancy and headmaster of Bay Ridge Prep. “There’s nothing being done to those sections.”

Fasano and 60 students and volunteers spent the morning at the section of the park by 81st Street pulling weeds and planting tulip bulbs.

“There are certain areas that are very pitched and you have to worry about soil erosion,” he said. “We were trying to put plants in those areas so the roots will keep the soil.”

The drive was part of a day of volunteering organized by the conservancy that stretched from 97th Street to Owls Head Park.

Pellumb Kurti, left, and Nelson Nieves, both of Bay Ridge, help clean up Shore Road Park on Saturday for the Shore Road Parks Conservancy’s It’s My Park Day.
