Cyclones 6
July 22 in Aberdeen
An error-ridden top of the ninth got the Cyclones close to victory but not close enough, as the Ironbirds took the first of a two game series, and snap the Cyclones three game winning streak.
The Brooks got on the board first in the third as they put up two runs, the first when Amed Rosario narrowly beat out an infield hit that scored Wil Fulmer who reached on a single to start off the inning. The second run came from a sacrifice fly from Jhoan Urena scored Adrien Abreu, who reached on a bloop double.
The Ironbirds tied it up in the bottom half of the third against starter Brandon Welch, who gave up a home run to Jamill Moquete and an RBI single to Alex Murphy. Alberto Baldonado came in to pitch in the fourth and only made it through an inning and a third as he gave up four runs.
In the eighth, the Cyclones closed in on the Ironbirds lead as Tucker Tharp, Adrien Abreu, Amed Rosario, and Jhoan Urena each had singles. Tharp and Abreu later scored. Cleanup hitter Michael Conforto, hit into a fielder’s choice that resulted in another run. Errors for the Ironbirds gave the Cyclones one more run in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough for Clones to get the win.
The Cyclones face the Ironbirds one last time Wednesday before returning home to Brooklyn on Thursday.
