Aug. 14 at Auburn
A 16-hit barrage, plus awesome starting pitching from surging starter Brad Holt, was all the Cyclones needed to put away Auburn and get out of upstate New York with a series win against the pesky Doubledays.
Holt, who just got as a New York-Penn League all-star, showed why, going seven strong innings, striking out eight, and giving up only a second-inning solo shot. He’s now 4–3 with an impressive 1.98 ERA.
But even without Holt’s heroism, the Cyclones had this game in the bag from the start. In the second, with bases loaded and two outs, Kirk Nieuwenhuis did what he has done so many times this year: deliver. The Big N drove in two with a single and then later came in on Seth Williams’s two-run double.
That four-run lead would hold up, but the Cyclones weren’t done. The team added a run in the sixth on a Matt Smith single, and a run in the seventh on an Eric Campbell double.
The bats continued to bash in the eighth, scoring three more on RBI singles by Williams and Josh Satin and a Doubleday miscue.
Relievers Erik Turgeon and James Fuller blanked Auburn the rest of the way. Each struck out two in his no-hit inning.
Brooklyn remained four games back of the first-place Staten Island Yankees, who never seem to lose anymore.
