Cyclones 8
Willamsport 4
July 19 at MCU Park
Octavio Acosta gave up just one unearned run on four hits in eight innings of work and slugger Mike Conforto smacked his first professional hit as the Cyclones broke an eight-game losing streak.
The game remained scoreless until the sixth, when a single knocked in Robinson Torres, who had reached on an error, stole second, and got to third on a wild pitch from Acosto (3–1, 1.46 earned run-average).
Making his professional debut, the first-round pick Conforto (1-for-4), who batted fourth and was the designated hitter, helped the Clones answer back in the bottom of the frame when he opened the inning with a single to right field. He and Michael Katz later scored on single by Michael Bernal before Adrien Abreu hit a three run bomb to left to put the game away. All
Luis Mateo struggled in the night, throwing a wild pitch and allowing a home run and three runs, but was able mop up for the Cyclones.
The Mini-Mets once again take on the Crosscutters on Sunday during Superhero day at MCU Park, game starts at 5:00.
Ups and Downs
Free baseball: Friday night’s 12–7 heartbreaker left the Cyclones and those in the press box exhausted. The marathon game lasted five hours and five minutes over 15 innings, making it the longest game of the season.
Below .500: After Saturday night’s win the Cyclones are three games below .500. The team has never been more than seven games under the halfway mark. It is also one of four professional franchises to finish .500 or better every year since 2001.
