Southwest Brooklyn residents are encouraged to roll up their sleeves as Assembly Member William Colton (D-47) and City Council Member Susan Zhuang (D-43) launch their annual neighborhood summer cleanup series.
The first event is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are asked to gather at 29 Bay 25th St. before dispersing to targeted areas throughout the community. Cleanup sites will be selected based on community feedback.
In a release, Colton and Zhuang highlighted the importance of community participation in creating cleaner, safer neighborhoods in the areas they represent.
“Our community cleanups are incredibly important,” Colton said. “Not only do they beautify the neighborhood, making it an even better place to work, live and raise a family, but they bring residents together with a common goal of improving the place they are proud to call home.”
“People of all ages have been joining us in our cleanups for years,” he continued. “Senior citizen groups are as likely to participate as high school students who need community service credits, and everyone comes away with the satisfaction provided by a job well-done.”
Colton has hosted neighborhood cleanups for several years, and they’ve become a fixture in his district during the warmer months. In past events, residents have helped remove litter and pull weeds.
Zhuang, who is participating in the cleanup series for the second time since being elected in 2023, echoed Colton’s sentiments and stressed the need for ongoing collaboration between communities and city government.
“Our community is always in need of cleanup, and I spend everyday fighting to ensure the city pays attention,” Zhuang said. “This cleanup is not only important to ensure we enhance our quality of life but showing city government that we care about our district and we need them to care too. Everyone deserves clean and safe streets.”
The cleanup series will continue throughout the summer and fall with future dates and locations to be announced, while current cleanups will focus on the Bay Parkway and Bath Avenue.
