Two new shows are opening at Safe-T-Gallery May 15: Judith Nilson’s “Five Paintings” and Anders Goldfarb’s “Constants and Variables.”
The shows run through June 15 and offer an opening reception May 15, 6-8 p.m. at Safe-T-Gallery, 111 Front Street, suite 214 in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn.
A choice selection of recent photographs by Brooklyn-based artist Goldfarb will represents the latest segment of what is becoming a life-long project documenting the changing physical and psychological states of formerly blue-collar, now rapidly-gentrifying, North Brooklyn and the surrounding areas.
Goldfarb records both the remnants of the past still visible in Williamsburg and Greenpoint as well as the ‘variables’ — those moments of unexpected beauty and transcendence that appear before the solitary traveler in the city.
Five new, richly-pigmented, finely-detailed, abstract paintings by Brooklyn artist Judith Nilson offer a base of intense color — four of the five paintings dark with graphite — each painting develops a patina-like network of fine markings.
These marks, mostly made with the edge of a razor, resolve into complex forms that evoke both biomorphic and geological features. As the marks extend over the surface and into the depths of the picture, an overarching composition emerges that contains both tense emotional passages, but also areas where time moves at a much slower, almost evolutionary pace.
