Cop’s gun did it – Report: officer shot suspect

Police sources confirmed this week that one of the gunshot wounds suffered from a crazed Canarsie party last month was caused by a cop’s bullet.

A ballistic report reportedly lent credence to the longtime suspicion. Yet, as this paper went to press, NYPD officials had not identified the officer involved in the shooting. Nor has anyone released the actions the NYPD is taking in this case.

Repeated attempts to reach an NYPD spokesperson on this matter were not returned as this paper went to press.

All police officials would say was that the shooting was still under investigation, and would not comment if the officer involved had been either transferred or put on modified assignment.

Cops were called to a basement party near the corner of Rockaway Parkway and Flatlands Avenue at 2:55 a.m. on July 26 after suspected shooter Jamel Childs, 18, pulled a gun and fired three times, hitting another young man in the chest.

When the victim began staggering about the party claiming that he had been shot, startled witnesses began pouring out of the basement location in droves, witnesses said.

Responding officers found dozens of people running from the party.

Some were seen scrambling to nearby back yards, where they vaulted fences into neighboring properties.

A witness told police that Childs was allegedly with a group escaping through the rear yards during the crazed getaway attempt.

Cops caught up with Childs and three other men and ordered them to stop. When they didn’t, a chase began — a pursuit that ended when one of the cops apparently let two rounds go from his pistol, hitting one of the men Childs was with in the arm.

All three were taken into custody, officials said.

Cops reportedly found the .38 revolver on Childs, who was charged with attempted murder, assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.

His victim was listed in good condition at Brookdale Hospital, officials said.

The man the police had shot was also listed in stable condition after treatment, officials said.

A source said that the cop who fired his gun did not immediately report the discharge as cops tried to make heads or tails of the situation.

He did admit to firing his weapon before leaving the scene, however, officials said.
