Cops say they have nabbed a thief who swiped two iPhones on consecutive days last week — but they couldn’t have done it without a brilliant open-field tackle by a witness.
In the first incident, the perp grabbed a new iPhone 4 from a 34-year-old woman on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Eighth Street at 10:40 pm on June 20 before fleeing into the subway station one block away.
The next day, the thief was at work again, this time on Seventh Avenue, sneaking up from behind a 29-year-old woman as she listened to music on the device at around 11 am.
The thief made his move near 10th Street, snatching the iPhone and darting westbound, where a heroic 35-year-old man tackled him and held him until authorities arrived.
Global conspiracy
A bandit ransacked an Eighth Street apartment on June 23, making off with computers and some international currency.
The 30-year-old victim told cops that she left the unit — between Fourth and Fifth avenues — at 7:45 that morning. When she returned at 6 pm, she found the window to the fire escape open, and her Dell and Mac laptops, as well as Canadian and Australian bills, missing.
Frowney’s pizza
A thief nabbed a Manhattan woman’s pocketbook from Smiley’s Pizzeria on June 25.
The 26-year-old victim said that she left her pocketbook at the pizza parlor at the corner of Seventh Avenue at around 1:30 am, but the purse, with her cellphone, credit cards, school ID, cash, driver’s license and Coach wallet, was gone when she went back to retrieve it.
The perp was spotted on surveillance footage, but nobody has been apprehended.
Paper trail
A potty-minded thief did the old switcheroo, grabbing a woman’s purse from Bar Reis on Fifth Avenue on June 16 and exchanging it with a toilet-paper filled bag.
The 29-year-old victim left her bag at the watering hole between Fifth and Sixth streets at around 11 pm. When she returned to grab it, she found a different black bag — this one filled with a roll of toilet paper — in its place.
The victim lost an ABC Home gift card worth $60, her keys, and the black leather bag itself, worth $345.
