Cops: Suspect beat up man for a smoke

60th Precinct

Coney Island—Brighton Beach—Seagate

Up in smoke

Police picked up a suspect who they say assaulted a man who refused to give him a cigarette on Avenue W on Oct. 12.

The victim said he was walking between Stillwell Avenue and W. 13th Street at 10 pm when the defendant came approached and demanded a smoke. When the victim refused, the accused allegedly punched him in the face. Cops said the suspect was carrying a long kitchen knife on him when they arrested him.

Captive clutch

A man was arrested for stealing a woman’s purse and holding it for ransom on Mermaid Avenue on Oct. 10, police said.

The victim said she got a call from the accused at 8:45 am. She alleged that the defendant told her that he had her purse, which she had lost sometime before, and said he would only return it if she met him between Stillwell Avenue and W. 15th Street and gave him $1,000.

The victim agreed to the meeting, but brought a cop with her to free her hostage handbag. The officer said that when he attempted to apprehend the defendant, the man resisted arrest by flailing his arms.

Nightmare on W. 32nd St.

Cops cuffed a man who they say brutalized a woman on W. 32nd Street on Oct. 10.

The victim said the accused attacked her between Neptune and Mermaid avenues, grabbing her by the hair and throwing her to the ground. The woman said the defendant then choked her, and repeatedly struck her in the body and face with his fist.
