The “fastest growing sport in New York City” now has its own ‘field of dreams’ at refurbished Canarsie Park.
A regulation-sized cricket field, whose arrival coincides with the Mayor’s Cup Cricket Tournament finals, was among the new additions at the community playpen, Paerdegat Avenue North and Seaview Avenue, which has undergone a $6.5 million makeover.
New York City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe joined Borough President Marty Markowitz and Councilmember Lew Fidler to celebrate the completion of the first phase of renovations at the park, which now also boasts new paths, bleachers and a picnic grove in addition to benches, steel fencing perimeters and drinking fountains.
The environmentally-sensitive plan contoured the landscape for on-site water management, including the construction of two lakes. New landscaping of the natural areas includes special grass mixes for the lawns and native herbaceous perennials; among them, wildflowers, shrubs and trees.
