Members of the electronic music and rap scenes are mourning a Bushwick DJ who was fatally struck by a driver while riding his bike on Tuesday.

Zack Xochil Fortune, known on stage as Furoche, was riding his bicycle through the intersection of Broadway and Myrtle Avenue in Bushwick when a motorist plowed into him at 2:32 pm on Tuesday, an FDNY spokesman said. Emergency services brought him to Woodhull Medical Center in critical condition, fire officials said, and he later died, according to friends.

On Wednesday afternoon, police and fire officials still had not received word that Fortune had succumbed to his injuries, but by then his closest friends and fans were already blanketing the internet with tributes to him and had raised more than $6,100 toward his funeral.

“It is a pretty heavy loss in our underground,” said friend Anna Dang, DJ Annalog. “He was bound to break through. He was the closest thing I had to family in New York.”

Fortune and Dang both recently performed for big-name dubstep producer Skrillex at a Manhattan skate apparel store, Dang said, and Furoche had just completed a short tour with legendary Memphis rapper Gangsta Boo of the seminal group Three Six Mafia, according to the website Mass Appeal.
