Hudson Valley 4
Cyclones 1
July 17 at MCU Park
The Cyclones were held to two hits in the team’s fourth consecutive loss, falling 4–1 to Hudson Valley on Sunday.
Brooklyn’s lone run came early as Pete Alonso reached on a throwing error by Renegades third baseman Jim Haley to begin the second. With Alonso on second and two out, Jay Jabs hit one to third which led to Haley’s second throwing error and a 1–0 lead for the Cyclones as Alonso scored. It was the first run Travis Ott surrendered in 2016.
Haley also made a third error in the ninth inning.
The Renegades bounced back after the miscues and took the lead in the bottom of the frame with three runs off Brooklyn starter Joel Huertas. With runners on the corners and two outs, a run-scoring single from Jose Rojas tied the score at one. Bill Pujols followed with a double to left to score two runs and give Hudson Valley a 3–1 lead.
Huertas gave up three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out two in his two innings of work. He left the game with an injury while warming up in the third.
Alejandro Castro and Austin McGeorge both tossed two innings of shutout relief for the Cyclones.
Hudson Valley tacked on a run against Mets first-round pick Justin Dunn in the seventh. Danny De La Calle led off with a double to right, moved to third on an errant pick-off throw from catcher Ali Sanchez and scored on a Jose Rojas single to make it 4–1.
The Renegades racked up 10 hits against Brooklyn, but Ott’s dominance on the mound was the key to the series-opening victory. Ott gave up one unearned run in six innings and allowed only two hits, both to Blake Tiberi. One of the two hits was an infield single.
Jayson McKinley picked up the save with three no-hit innings.
The 13–17 Cyclones look to get back in the win column when they take on the Renegades at 11:05 am on Monday.
