Cyclones fall in series opener against Yanks

Yankees 4
Cyclones 3

Wednesday, July 29, at Keyspan Park

Starter Mark Cohoon didn’t have it, giving up three runs in the first inning of the opener of a five-game series against the hated Yankees.

Cohoon gave up a single, a triple and two doubles in the debacle of an inning.

The Cyclones stormed back in the bottom of the frame, though, getting a run on a Justin Garber leadoff double and a Tyler Vaughn RBI single.

The Clones added a run in the fourth on a Robbie Shields triple and an RBI by the struggling Luis Nieves.

And the Brooks tied it in the sixth on a Nieves double, a wild pitch and a passed ball.

But reliever Matias Carrillo blew the game in the eighth, giving up a single and a double that plated the winning run.

The game was delayed for two and a half hours by rain. Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled and will be played as part of a doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch at 6 pm.

The loss reduced the 26-13 Cyclones’ first-place lead to five games.
