Cyclones rally in ninth, but lose in 10

Aberdeen 5
Cyclones 4

June 22 at MCU Park

The Cyclones rallied from a 4–0 deficit in the ninth to tie the game, but lost to the IronBirds in the 10th, 5–4.

Aberdeen starter Sebestian “Luke” Vader threw eight shutout innings, striking out 10 Cyclones before giving way to Williams Louico, who allowed three consecutive singles to Gavin Cecchini, L.J. “Mini Maz” Mazzilli and Jared King. The hurler then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Cecchini to score before Matt “Bright Eyes” Oberste knocked in Mazzilli with a single. King ran home on a passed ball, then Clones catcher Colton Plaia singled Oberste home to tie the score.

But Aberdeen took the lead in the top of the 10th on an RBI single by Kris Richards, and the Cylcones couldn’t again work magic in the bottom half of the frame.

The ninth inning comback showed the team’s heart, but Cyclones manager Rich Donnelly claimed it never had to happen, had his pitcher thrown the ball over the plate more consistently, because all five of the IronBirds’ runs were scored by players who either walked or were hit by a pitch.

“That tells the story of the whole game,” Donnelly said. “When that happens, you lose. It was a good comeback, but you can’t walk people or throw the ball away.”

The Cyclones return to MCU Park to play the Hudson Valley Renegades tonight at 5 pm.
