Cyclones 7
Mahoning Valley 5
July 17 at MCU Park
The Cyclones scored the first six runs and then held off a furious rally to preserve the win at MCU Park on Wednesday.
Already up 1–0 in the third, the Brooklyn’s Boys of Summer had their most productive inning of the year, sending 10 batters to the plate, recording five hits and five runs, and earning their largest lead of the season.
Cyclones’ manager Rich Donnelly said it was a relief to get that kind of a lead because of the way the later innings went.
“It was good to have a little cushion,” he said. “Thank goodness we had one, because the second half of the game, we didn’t do too well.”
The Scrappers fought back slowly, scoring four runs in the next four innings, but the Clones’ cushion and a timely home run by Juan Gamboa in the sixth proved too much for Mahoning Valley to overcome.
The homer was the first hit by the Cyclones at home this season, but Gamboa’s accomplishment was overshadowed by the Scrappers’ Nellie Rodriguez, who had two home runs and all five of Mahoning Valley’s RBIs on the game.
The Cyclones play the Scrappers again tonight at 7 pm.
