Good hitting, good pitching and three errors by the other team usually add up to a victory — and in this case, they did for the Cyclones.
Brooklyn got on the board in the first, when J.R. Voyles’s double plated Kirk Nieuwenhuis. A Sean Ratliff homer in the second added another run. And an Ike Davis two-out single in the third gave the Cyclones a 3–1 lead.
The Doubledays chipped back with a run in the sixth, but the Cyclones put it away with three unearned runs in the ninth. After two errors loaded the bases for the Cyclones, Nieuwenhuis hit his fourth triple of the year and knocked them clean.
Starter Chris Schwinden was impressive, upping his record to 3–1 (with a 1.09 ERA), giving up just one earned run over six innings. Relievers Wendy Rosa (1 IP) and Roy Merritt (2 IP) gave up no hits the rest of the way. Merritt, in fact, struck out every batter he faced!
With the win, the Cyclones still trail the hot and hated Staten Island Yankees by three games. But now that the Brooks have improved their record to 30–24 (.556), they’re now in striking distance of the lone New York-Penn League wildcard slot.
