Cyclones 6
Vermont 4
Aug. 18 at MCU Park
The Cyclones used six hits to score three runs in a wild eighth inning to come back to beat Vermont on Sunday at MCU Park.
The Cyclones took a 3–1 lead into the eighth inning on a sac fly by Anthony Chavez in the third and two RBIs by L.J. “Mini-Maz” Mazzilli and Jared King in the fifth. Rob “Not-so-silent G” Gsellman pitched all seven innings, striking out five and allowing just one run on five hits.
But as soon as David Wynn took the mound, the Vermont bats exploded with a single and a double by Boog Powell and B.J. Boyd, followed by two straight walks, allowing Powell to score. A sacrifice fly by Tyler Marincov scored another run, and James “Papa” Roche threw the ball into the visitor’s dugout, allowing another run to come home.
But the Clones responded in the bottom of the eighth, when King, Roche, and Alex Sanchez hit consecutive singles to load the bases, and a wild pitch by Vermont’s Sam Bragg allowed King to make it home. Matt “Bright Eyes” Oberste and Colton Plaia followed up with consecutive RBIs to take the game back from the Lake Monsters.
Aberdeen also lost its game to Connecticut, pulling the Cyclones within one game of the division lead with a five-game set against the putrid Staten Island Yankees, who sit in last place with a 23–34 record. The set begins tonight with a doubleheader at MCU Park starting at 5:30 pm.
