Cyclones win, still in second place

Cyclones 8
Tri-City 1

Aug. 26 at MCU Park

The Cyclones picked up the team’s fourth straight win, and kept pace with the equally hot Aberdeen IronBirds in the race for the McNamara Division crown.

The Clones started early again, when Jonathan Clark was hit by a pitch to lead off the opening inning, after which L.J. “Mini-Maz” Mazzilli singled. Jared King doubled to deep center to score Clark and send Mazzilli to third and a sacrifice fly by Alex Sanchez scored Mazzilli to take an early 2–0 lead.

The Cyclones continued the offensive onslaught, adding five runs in the second inning. The first five batters to come to the plate each reached base on four singles and a fielding error. The final two in the streak resulted in RBIs by Gavin Cecchini and Mazzilli.

James “Papa” Roche then hit both Cecchini and Mazzilli home with a bases-clearing triple and Roche finished off the productive inning coming home on a wild pitch.

The Valley Cats scored the team’s only run in the fifth off a wild pitch by Dario Alvarez, but the Cyclones still owned a decisive 7–1 lead, which it increased to the final score in the seventh when Anthony Chavez walked with bases loaded to score King.

As hot as the Cyclones have been, however, Aberdeen has matched the hot streak win for win. The IronBirds came out on top in 11 innings to keep the Cyclones a half a game back of first place.

Brooklyn and Tri-City will meet again tonight at 7 pm.
