“And Possibility,”a traveling dance about traveling choreographed by Abigail Levine, will be performed May 18, June 1 and 8. The show superimposes the color-rich images and fantasies of tourism onto the backdrops of our city’s neighborhoods.
Levine creates a world of imagined discovery and leisure, in which everything and everyone is a potential souvenir. The troupe of 10 dancers and musicians emerge from the crowd, conjuring images of a circus caravan, a band of traveling salesmen, a wayward tour group, and a New Orleans Second Line band.
Exuberantly off-timed dances and scenes promoting destinations from Arkansas and Indonesia are framed and veiled by a simple, mobile set — painted plastic curtains in a frame on wheels. The performers wend their way through emblematic NYC locations, including Columbus Circle and the Coney Island Boardwalk. They weave their surroundings into the work, turning city life into the performance itself.
The eight dancers are guided by the irreverent, jazz-driven score of composer and violist Karen Waltuch, as well as trumpeters Ben Holmes and Nate Wooley. Set painting are by printmaker-painter Rachel Ostrow.
All performances are free and begin at 4 p.m. They will take place June 1 at the Parkside Circle at Parkside and Ocean avenues in Brooklyn at the entrance to Prospect Park and June 8 on the Coney Island Boardwalk at West 8th Street in front of the NY Aquarium.
