‘David et Jonathas’ premiere

The American Opera Theater presents the New World Premiere of Charpentier’s rarely performed opera, “David et Jonathas,” with performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), May 9-10 in the Opera House.

Written by Charpentier in 1688 for the Jesuit College Louis-Le-Grand in Paris, France, the French Baroque five-act sacred opera recounts the tragic story of the love between David, future king of the nation of Israel, and Jonathan, the eldest son of Saul, King of Israel, and their struggle to reconcile their affection for each other, their conflicted loyalty to Saul, who has been father to them both, and the inexplicable will of the Israelite God.

The American Opera Theater (AOT), a young company known for its innovative productions and cutting-edge approach, presents the opera from a 21st century perspective, in a postmodern production that gives equal importance to music, text and acting.
