School District 22’s Community Education Council (CEC) is asking parents to join the group “just in case.”
“Our current term ends in June 2009, as does the law that created Community Education Councils. There is going to be an election just in case this spring,” said Christopher Spinelli, president of the CEC.
Up for grabs will be nine seats meant for parents or guardians of elementary and middle school students in District 22, which spans Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, Manhattan Beach, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach and parts of Midwood, Flatbush and Sheepshead Bay.
The borough president’s office appoints two additional members who do not have children in local schools but are interested in playing a role in public education.
“I ask that you do spread the word for parents who are interested in running for election,” Spinelli said.
The CEC meets once a month to discuss new city Department of Education (DOE) policies, as well as issues affecting individual schools in District 22.
The district’s community superintendent is present at the meetings to offer details about new procedures and answer questions from CEC members and parents.
Council members also play a role if the DOE decides to reconfigure school zoning lines.
Parents who want to get involved but don’t want to wait until the next term can apply for the two vacancies currently on the CEC.

Council spots are not open to parents currently serving on a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) or School Leadership Team.
