Red Hook’s dockworkers think Gov. Spitzer could be the captain that saves them from the Bloomberg administration’s plan to close their cargo port on the Red Hook waterfront.
The city’s Economic Development Corporation wants to evict port operator American Stevedoring and build a tourist-friendly development that would include a new brew house for Brooklyn Brewery, a smaller industrial port as well as a 250-room hotel, artist’s studios and maritime-themed attractions.
Spitzer has committed to reviewing the city’s plan, according to an administration spokesman. And last week, his newly appointed Port Authority head said the regional agency also plans to look closely at the city plan before giving the green light promised by former Gov. Pataki.
So dockworkers cheered: “I have faith in this governor doing what’s right and what will keep us working,” said Anthony Intartaglia, a second-generation longshoreman.
