It’s a spook-tacular Fort Greene tradition!
Furry, four-legged Brooklynites modeled a gamut of getups in Fort Greene Park on Sunday during the neighborhood’s annual dog-costume contest, where one mutt had onlookers salivating with his breakfast-inspired disguise, according to an admirer.
“My favorite was probably a beagle that was covered in lox and cream cheese — a cream-cheese-and-lox beagle,” said Fort Greener Peter Adams, who brought his mutt George to sniff out the competition.
The bagel-loving beagle wasn’t the only pup whose outfit took inspiration from food — Adams dressed George as a bunch of grapes, an ironic costume that he said called attention to what many say is a forbidden fruit for Fido.
“Grapes are dangerous for dogs, it was a meta thing,” Adams said.
Dozens of furballs came out to the green space for the 20th-annual Great Pupkin Dog Costume Contest, which drew canines dressed as politicians, athletes, and television and film characters.
And the festivities weren’t just an opportunity for dressed-up pups to parade in front of Halloween-loving humans — some of the dogs in attendance were looking for forever homes, according to one foster mom, who brought the Maltese-Yorkie mix Archie she’s currently caring for to the costume party, and praised it as a wonderful way to come together.
“It was his first experience with a lot of other dogs since we got him, it was good for him to socialize,” said Downtowner Fernanda Serpa, who dressed Archie, who is available for adoption through True North Rescue Mission, as Luke Skywalker for the occasion.
