A pet bunny named Kenny had a “hoppy” reunion with his family after firefighters rescued him from a Dyker Heights house fire on Tuesday morning.
Units from the FDNY’s 8th Division responded to the blaze on 73rd Street between 12th and 13th avenues, which broke out in the rear of a two-story brownstone just after 9:30 a.m. At least 60 firefighters from 12 units worked to extinguish the fire and searched for trapped residents.
Firefighters quickly rescued a toddler and reunited him with his family outside — then, to the relief of all, carried out Kenny the bunny in his cage, unharmed by the flames. All other residents had successfully evacuated the building.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the FDNY’s fire marshal. The building did not have any recent violations with the Department of Buildings or Department of Housing Preservation and development, per city records.
