Play your music too loud, and you may attract some unexpected visitors to your next backyard barbecue — the police.
The 67th Precinct will be keeping a close eye and ear on noise from outdoor parties in East Flatbush, Deputy Inspector Corey Pegues promised members of Community Board 17, gathered at Downstate Medical Center, 395 Lenox Road, for a meeting late last month.
“Summer’s here, There will be more barbecues, backyard parties and clubs,” Pegues told the group. “It’s going to be out of control.”
But, cops will not allow that to happen, he said. Pegues said the precinct had called in club owners and those who run mas camps, and laid down the law to them at a meeting in June. “The music is going to be cut off pretty early,” he warned.
“If we get noise complaints at parties, we will police them in a nice way,” Pegues promised. But, he said, if asking politely to turn the music low isn’t effective, “We will come back again and shut you down.
“We are going to be patrolling parties,” Pegues added.
Besides disrupting the neighborhood’s peace and quiet, the parties can also be dangerous, Pegues noted. He recalled that the precinct had received a noise complaint for one location from 311 a week earlier. “We went by, and there was no noise.” But then, “An hour later, three people were shot. This one was a party of the Bloods and the Crips.”
There was a shooting at another party the same week, Pegues added.
“We’ve got to do something about these parties,” he contended. “We are going to be nice and tactful, but we will be forceful.
“We are looking for a great summer,” Pegues concluded.
