Police are still looking for the suspect in the homicide of a 39-year-old Hispanic man in Williamsburg earlier this month.
Raymond Blas, a resident of 54 Maujer Street, was shot less than a block away from his home on November 3 at 2:30 PM by an unidentified man driving a green Nissan Maxima.Blas was taken to Woodhull Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead later that afternoon.
Detectives from the 90th Precinct are still investigating the homicide and do not have a description of the perpetrator.
“We are asking any witnesses to this crime to come forward,” said 90th Precinct Deputy Inspector Michael Kemper.“It’s an open investigation.”
At a 90th Precinct Community Council meeting at Lindsey Park Houses (30 Montrose Avenue), Kemper emphasized that overall crime for the year was down 11.42 percent, including violent crime.
“Shooting incidents are down significantly this year,” said Kemper.“Last year there were 17 people shot, and ten people were shot this year.Still, that’s ten people.We’re optimistic that we can reduce that number even lower.”
Though robberies are down 25.7 percent, grand larcenies are down 22.8 percent, and auto thefts are down 21.3 percents, murders have increased 50 percent this year, with six committed this year compared to four last year and burglaries have increased 17.4 percent with 398 committed this year compared with 339 committed in 2008.
With the holiday season approaching, Kemper said that more uniformed officers will be deployed on major commercial streets in Williamsburg, including Graham, Bedford and Grand Avenues.
“Were going to try our best to have a safe holiday season, but we need your help,” said Kemper.
