Ironbirds 2
Cyclones 3 (14 inns.)

Monday, July 27, at Keyspan Park

The Cyclones got a gutsy, come-from-behind win thanks to great pitching, an important defensive play, and a walk-off wild pitch in the 14th inning.

Starter James Fuller gave up both runs, the first in the fourth on a double and a wild pitch, and another in the eighth on a single and two errors. In all, the Cyclones committed four faux pas on the night.

Wild thing: Cyclone Robbie Shields races home with the game-winning run after an Ironbird wild pitch in the bottom of the 14th inning at Keyspan Park. Shields was later mobbed by his teammates.

He yielded only two hits on the night and lowered his ERA to 1.64.

The Cyclones tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, thanks to a leadoff infield single by Matt Gaski, followed by a walk to John Servidio, a sacrifice, a groundout and a Tyler Vaughn RBI single.

The Cyclone pen shut down the lowly Aberdeen Ironbirds for the last six frames. But the result might have been different without a great throw by outfielder Luis Rivera to cut down an Ironbird runner trying to score from second on a single in the top of the 13th.

In the home 14th, Robbie Shields led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt, went to third on a groundout, and scored on the wild pitch.

The win upped the Cyclones’ league-leading record to 26-11.
