They bade summer farewell as school bells get ready to ring.
Hundreds of families came out to Canarsie Park on Thursday to enjoy time together before the kids return to the classroom, during state Sen. Roxanne Persaud’s Family Fun Day. Youngsters got to scale a rock climbing wall with the help of local police officers, muster up all their strength during a game of tug-of-war, and get their faces painted. And for one youth, the climbing wall was not only fun — it was a lesson in never giving up.
“The first time I went half way, and then the second time I went all the way up,” said Kiana Joseph from Canarsie.
The 10-year-old climber also learned valuable fire-fighting skills as she, her grandmother, and her 6-year-old sister Lakia navigated their way through a pretend smoke-filled house the Fire Department set up to let people practice escaping an emergency.
And Joseph showed off the colorful butterfly she had painted on her face during the event — all of the kids really enjoyed the day, said grandma Jonetta Adubor.
“We had a good time — face painting, they climbed the rock,” she said. “They had a wonderful time.”
