On view now through March 18, architect
James Rossant’s whimsical installation "New York Live"
has taken over the five myles gallery (558 St. Johns Place at
Franklin Avenue). Rossant’s walk-in installation embodies the
breathless and ongoing evolution of New York City, said gallery
owner Hanne Tierney. "It’s a strange funhouse where the
sedate older city is crawling with flexible new creature-buildings
– there’s no city planning here."
James Rossant served as the master planner for the cities of
Reston, Va. and Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania, as well as for
New York’s Lower Manhattan plan in 1969.
Enjoy the installation with a backdrop of music on March 9 at
6 pm, when composer-musicians Adam Fisher, Oscar Noeiga, Jane
Wang and Nataniel Gonzalez will perform. The gallery is open
Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 pm to 6 pm and by appointment
(718) 783-4438.
