Art attack
Check out the new exhibit from photographer Steve McCurry — he’s the guy who shot the famous “Afghan Girl” cover for National Geographic — and cartoonist Kim Jung Gi, who has drawn a graphic novel about McCurry’s experience documenting the city on Sept. 11, 2001. Work from both men with be on display, and Gi will be drawing live at the opening.

Going Gowanus
The 20th annual Gowanus Open Studios kicks off today, with more than 300 artists in the Canal-adjacent nabe welcoming visitors to their work spaces. You can plan your visit on the Arts Gowanus site, or just look for balloons outside the doors of participating site. And be sure to stop by Trestle Projects for the “Falling In” exhibit, which is all about the Gowanus Canal — and is right across the street from the tonight’s Art Party at Halyards Bar.

Weird science
The City of Science festival happening today at the Park Slope Armory may be aimed at kids, but why let them have all the experimental fun? You can use a “seismic accelerator” to launch objects across the room, walk on water — or at least a “non-Newtonian” fluid — if you’re fast enough, and muscle children out of the way so you can tip over giant dominos. Science is awesome!

Stepping out
The Bessie awards return to Brooklyn! The dance world’s answer to the Tony will recognize the city’s best choreographers, productions, and performances tonight at BAM, after five years in exile in Manhattan. Slip in to the star-studded event, hosted by comedian Adrienne Truscott, and catch performances from the best hoofers in the biz, including Joya Powell, a tap tribute to Brenda Bufalino, and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (pictured).

Author Zadie Smith stops by Medgar Evers College to read from her new book “Swing Time,” about two biracial girls in London who aspire to be dancers. The acclaimed writer will chat with the audience afterwards, but be sure to show up on time — the doors will close as soon as she cracks open the book.
