Mappa don’t preach

Chamber pop band Mappa Mundi, led by multi-instrumentalist Adam Levine (pictured) offers a sneak listen at some of the new tunes from its upcoming album. Swoon to the Brooklyn band’s lush harmonies, then settle in for more songs from Thomas Moran and Eliza and the Organix.

9 pm at Pete’s Candy Store [709 Lorimer St., between Frost and Richardson streets in Williamsburg, (718) 302–3770, www.petescandystore.com]. Free.

The Revolution will be filmed

This month, the Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturday celebrates Black History month with music performances and monologues, a book talk with Revolution Books, and a screening of the documentary “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” (pictured) at 8 pm, followed by a discussion with the director.

5–11 pm at Brooklyn Museum [200 Eastern Pkwy. at Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights, (718) 638–5000, brooklynmuseum.org]. Free.

Super bowl of chili

We have no particular investment in this year’s Super Bowl, so any viewing party needs to have something extra. Freddy’s raises the bar with a chili contest — you provide the meat and beans, they provide the sour cream, cheese, and chips. Judging begins at half-time — and all day you can enjoy the happy hour special of a beer and a Nathan’s hot dog for $5.

6:30 pm at Freddy’s Bar [627 Fifth Ave. between 17th and 18th streets in Greenwood Heights, (718) 768–0131, www.freddysbar.com]. Free.

Like a kid in a candy store: Adam Levine and the rest of the chamber pop band Mappa Mundi will play at Pete’s Candy Store on Feb. 5.

Here comes the Son

If you read descriptions of Kent Russell’s non-fiction collection “I Am Sorry to Think I Have Raised a Timid Son,” you see a lot of words like “society’s ragged edge” and “private childhood demons,” which might obscure the fact that the Prospect Lefferts Gardens writer can also be really funny. Tonight he reads with Amanda Petrusich, author of “Do Not Sell at Any Price.”

7 pm at Word [126 Franklin St. at Milton Street in Greenpoint, (718) 383–0096, www.wordbrooklyn.com]. Free.

Vintage models

Fashion models are the worst, with their pretty faces and youthful bodies. Yuck! Cleanse the palate with “Old Bags,” a one-night-only photo exhibit of middle-aged women with bags over their heads, created as a cheeky response to a culture terrified of aging.

6:30–9:30 pm at Rabbithole [33 Washington St. between Water and Plymouth streets in Dumbo, (718) 852–1500], www.rabbitholeprojects.com]. Free.

Holding the line: The documentary “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” will screen at the Brooklyn Museum during its free First Saturday event on Feb. 6.
