Hands on

This film series comes with no strings attached! The Brooklyn Academy of Music is celebrating marionettes in movies this weekend with its Puppets on Film series. Flicks today include “Muppets Most Wanted,” “Return of the Jedi,” and “I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story.” There will also be a series of kid-appropriate shorts for pint-sized puppet fans.

Voice of an ‘Angel’

I think this line’s mostly filler. The Way Station’s monthly Nerd Cabaret night celebrates both Halloween and the works of Joss Whedon with HalloWhedon — a live performance of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” and that music episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (No “The Man They Call Jayne”? We predict a Browncoat mutiny). Costumes are encouraged, and there will also be a trivia contest.

Last bites

Educational institution Brooklyn Brainery gets into the grim spirit of the season with a presentation titled “Food of the Dead: A Culinary History of Funeral Food.” Historic gastronomist Sarah Lohman will explain the traditional ties between cremation and mastication, while attendees sample beer from Midas’s tomb, funeral cakes, and Mormon funeral potatoes.

Flame grillers

These guys can set your mouth and fire — and then put it out! The Brooklyn Historical Society is paying tribute to firehouse chefs. Three cooks from Brooklyn firehouses talk about braising and boiling for New York’s Bravest, and then compete in a chili cook-off. There will also be some free fiery cocktails.
