Somewhere, someone is making a “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer”-style song about the day residents of East 59th Street and Avenue T got a holiday gift no one wanted %u2013 a street-wide ice rink on one of the coldest days of the year.
If the 11 inches of snowfall that pounded the city wasn’t enough, Mill Basin residents received a wintery double-whammy when an errant snow plow smacked into a fire hydrant Sunday night, leaving the corner soaked from water bubbling up from the cracked water pipe.
But it wasn’t water for long.
The freezing temperatures quickly turned everything to ice, but not before the water began flowing into people’s homes.
Ironically, the snow that could have stopped the water had already been shoveled aside, leaving responding firefighters no choice but to dam up what they could with garbage bags left out for pick up the next morning.
The water was shut off within a short time, but not before the damage was done and some disgruntled residents added the snow plow operator and the Department of Sanitation to their naughty lists.
