Free screenings and health information for better living

Lutheran’s celebration of National Health Center Week provided communities with six separate health education events. Lutheran Family Health Centers held free screenings and offered health information, underscoring the vital role of our nation’s community health center networks and building awareness for prevention and early detection.

National Health Center Week coincided with Lutheran’s own Internal Wellness campaign, where staff is encouraged to follow steps toward healthy living.

Approximately 3,000 community members attended the events and participated in free glucose, glaucoma, blood pressure and other screenings. Rapid HIV testing and counseling were also provided, as well as detailed information on Health Plus managed care programs.

A kick-off event at the Sunset Park Family Health Center featured NYC Health Commissioner Thomas R. Frieden, MD, who discussed how, together, the city and Lutheran are helping to build awareness for early detection, prevention and “healthier” decisions.

A special pre-kick-off celebration took place at Shore Hill Housing, sponsored by the Shore Road and Bay Ridge Family Health Centers. The Shore Hill Chinese Choir performed and Councilman Vincent Gentile, as well as Congressman Michael E. McMahon attended. Community members received blood pressure and cholesterol screenings.

The Family Physician Family Health Center and the Brooklyn-Chinese Family Health Center recognized National Health Center Week with glaucoma screenings, information on WIC, breast self-exam training and Health Plus information. Special guests from the NYPD and FDNY were present.

NYS Assemblyman Felix Ortiz took part in the community events at the Sunset Terrace Family Health Center, where attendees were offered free rapid HIV testing and counseling.

The Park Slope Family Heath Center celebrated on August 15 and provided blood pressure screenings, refreshments and healthy snacks. NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery attended.

The Lutheran Family Health Centers (LFHC), based in Sunset Park at 150 55th Street, is a federally qualified community-based ambulatory health care system affiliated with Lutheran HealthCare.
