A group of people living near the Fresh Creek Nature Preserve have begun a petition drive to get the area cleaned up.
Contending that the preserve, “Does not have regular horticultural care,” and has become a dumping ground and hangout, the residents are calling on the city’s Department of Parks & Recreation to pay some attention to the area, which is bounded by East 108th Street, Louisiana Avenue, Shore Parkway and Flatlands Avenue.
“Fresh Creek Park is being vandalized and destroyed,” contended Maria Garrett during the April meeting of the 69th Precinct Community Council.
Speaking to the group gathered at the Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club, 77 Conklin Avenue, Garrett said that students from a nearby school have been, “Trespassing on the property.” The area, she said, is plagued by both garbage and graffiti.
Her goal is for “the city to come in there and revamp that park.” Among the requests included in the petition are “Regular patrol by Parks Department staff, pruning of the trees and the removal of the dead trees, litter and waste removal, and maintenance of filtration systems.”
