Next month, one Canarsie group will be celebrating 11 years of service to the community.
The Friends United Block Association (FUBA) will hold its annual banquet on June 1st, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Glen Terrace, 5313 Avenue N, honoring a host of prominent individuals serving the community.
Among those who will toasted at the gala event are Assemblymembers Alan Maisel and Helene Weinstein; Deputy Inspector Ralph Monteforte, formerly the commanding officer of the 69th Precinct; Sergeant Newell Laird, of the 69th Precinct’s Community Affairs unit; Lesley Craddock, the owner of S & L Industries; Armando Ariaf from White Castle; Herard Augustin, a trustee of Pilgrim Wesleyan Church; Emily Hames, the owner of Re/Max Jaguar Real Estate; and Constance Cincotta, president of Glenwood Mason Supply.
The keynote speaker for the evening will be New York City Comptroller William Thompson, Jr., a likely mayoral candidate.
The purpose of the event – for which tickets cost $100 – is to raise money for the organization’s after-school program as well as for the group’s operating expenses, said Gardy Brazela, FUBA’s president, when he urged the organization’s members to attend, during the group’s most recent meeting.
The program, which serves children age eight through 18, is headquartered at Public School 114, 1077 Remsen Avenue, and at a nearby office, at 1045 Remsen Avenue.
“As soon as I leave here, I’m going to send every one of you an invitation,” Brazela told the group gathered at Temple Shaare Emeth, 6012 Farragut Road, for the organization’s May meeting. “If you can make it, fine. If you can’t, it’s okay.”
