Girls for Gender Equity will present the Fourth Annual NYC Gender Equality Festival, July 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cuyler Gore Park, bounded by Fulton and Cumberland streets and Greene Avenue. This year’s theme is “Brooklyn We Go Hard,” a tribute to women’s advocacy, resilience and leadership.
Brooklyn−based artists and community organizations have been on the forefront of the fight to create safe and supportive spaces for community members to thrive and live free from harassment and violence.
This year, more than 70 organizations and artists will participate in a celebration of women’s advocacy, resilience and leadership by partaking in the community resource fair and festivities. Each will be offering information and services on a variety of topics including reproductive health, self−defense, women’s rights, sports and fitness. Organizations such as CAMBA, Asian Pacific Islander Coalition on HIVâ„AIDS (APICHA), and Bailey’s CafÉ participate annually.
The festival will also provide a special forum for youth activists and organizers. The Sisters in Strength internship program of Girls for Gender Equity will lead a Youth Forum. This interactive dialogue will include youth organizations throughout the five boroughs and highlight their work and mission to create safe spaces and resources for New York City youth.
Sisters in Strength has created original documentary and Forum theater work that explores the impact of sexual harassment in New York City schools, their play “More Than Just a Touch,” will be a featured performance in the Youth Forum.
The Gender Equality Festival, is a free public event for education, networking, resource sharing, community interaction, arts and recreation that is open to New Yorkers of all ages and genders.
In addition to entertainment, activities, and information, free food and prizes will also be given out to those who attend.
