Tired of mailing
out the same cutesy Santa-and-Rudolph greeting cards – or photos
of your dog in an elf costume – each holiday season? Park Slope
graphic designer Thea Karas has created a line of cards that
might just be your salvation this year.
The 29-year-old creates original art for colorful, winter- and
holiday-themed greeting cards that carry simple messages inside.
A bright yellow tree ornament popping off one card’s fuschia
background, for example, greets with "’tis the season .
. ." Another card, featuring a snowman (at left) seemingly
carved from ice, offers the message, "Season’s Greetings."
Karas said she developed her textually dynamic collage style
last year; she uses bits of colors and patterns that she clips
from magazines and scans into her computer. Many designs are
then embellished with drawing, painting or graphic techniques.
"There are situations where there are special orders like
business clients who want to put in their own message, and for
those I require a minimum order of 500," said Karas.
On Dec. 3, you can meet the designer at the craft fair at PS
39, Sixth Avenue between 8th and 9th streets, and on Dec. 4,
she will have a sidewalk display set up at Seventh Avenue at
Carroll Street.

Karas’s cards, $13.50 for 10 cards and 10 envelopes, vary between
5-inches by 5-inches and 5-inches by 7-inches and are shipped
via priority mail. (The Web site recommends allowing two to three
