On the eve of next Saturday’s memorial service for blogger Robert Guskind, the late journalist’s family released a list charities and is asking for donations in Guskind’s name.
Guskind (pictured) was found dead in his apartment on March 4 of an apparent drug overdose. He was cremated after a private funeral ceremony at Green-Wood Cemetery, but the public can mourn him on April 4 at the Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope, according to the blogger’s still-operating Gowanus Lounge Web site.
On Thursday, the family asked that in lieu of flowers, fans and mourners make donations to four groups:
• Empty Cages Collective, an animal and environmental advocacy group.
• Sean Casey Animal Rescue, which takes in strays, rescued, injured and ill animals for owners, zoos and shelters.
• The Coney Island History Project, whose name says it all. There is a link on the group’s donation Web site to a memorial fund in Guskind’s name.
• Greenpoint Reformed Church’s soup kitchen, which serves hundreds of needy people every week.
Guskind’s death has been lamented throughout the blogosphere and in The Brooklyn Paper, where he was an occasional contributor.
