This contest really put older Brooklynites on a pedestal!
Dozens of borough seniors faced off in a table-tennis tournaments at St. John’s Recreation Center in Crown Heights on May 13, as part of the inaugural Brooklyn Senior Games — a five-day sporting carnival celebrating Kings County residents aged 50 and over who are staying fit and healthy into their golden years, according to organizers.
“It underlines the importance of staying active and demonstrates to everyone that you can stay active throughout your life,” said Ean Fullerton, a spokesman for state Sen. Jesse Hamilton (D–Crown Heights), who organized the event in partnership with other local pols.
Nearly 200 athletes participated in the borough’s first oldster Olympics, which kicked off on May 9 with a torch relay through Williamsburg, Red Hook, Bushwick, Sunset Park, Brownsville, and Crown Heights.
Participants competed in events including bowling, swimming, basketball, and track and field, and Fullerton said the good times kept rolling through the closing ceremony and awards on May 14.
“It was definitely celebratory throughout,” he said.
Hamilton got the idea for the tournament after a local senior told him about winning a swimming contest upstate last year, and he decided to create a way for the borough’s wisest citizens to show off their athletic talents at home, according to Fullerton.
