Assemblywoman Joan Millman joined Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Botanic Garden President Scot Medbury and Independence Community Foundation Executive Director Marilyn Gelber to award winners of the Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest. The project is sponsored by Greenbridge, Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s community horticulture program, Sovereign Bank, the Independence Community Foundation and Borough President Markowitz. The purpose of the project is to encourage neighbors and businesses to spruce up their blocks and in doing so take pride in their surroundings.
“Every year I delight in seeing the many examples of community involvement encouraged through the Greenest Block Contest,” Millman said. “Brooklyn is home to so many innovative gardeners and active communities, it is no surprise that over 1,200 blocks in Brooklyn and over 500,000 Brooklynites have participated in this project. I thank the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Borough President Markowitz, the Independence Community Foundation and Sovereign Bank for fostering this effort.”
Winners in Millman’s Assembly District this year in the commercial category were plentiful — Bond Street (east side) between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street won First Place, the Mid-Atlantic Block Association (Atlantic Avenue, south side) between Bond and Nevins Streets won Second Place. In addition, the following received honorable mentions in the commercial category: the AaNT Atlantic Avenue Association between Nevins Street and Third Avenue North, Bond Street (west side) between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street, and the Mid-Atlantic Block Association (north side) between Bond and Nevins Streets.
Residential category winners in Millman’s district were the State Street Cathedral Block Association between Hoyt and Bond Streets tied for Second Place. The Greenest Storefront Award for Third Place was awarded to Stan’s Place, located at 411 Atlantic Avenue and the First Place winner of the Best Window Box Award was constituent Kathy Geisler at 352 State Street.
New awards for the Best Community Garden Streetscape were received by the Brooklyn Bears Pacific Street Garden, Flatbush Avenue between Atlantic & Pacific (First Place) and the 6/15 Green Community Garden, Sixth Avenue between 15th & 16th streets.
