Religious leaders joined worshippers for rites and prayers in Mill Basin as they broke ground for a new community facility to serve the borough’s Lubavitch community.
The group polished up on elbow grease and ceremoniously dug the first clumps of earth for what will be Chabad House’s new community center at 6404 Strickland, during a celebration, which included prayers, music and dancing.
The new facility – replicating the grand rebbe’s house in Crown Heights and named The Mill Basin 770 in honor of the spiritual leader’s address – will feature a synagogue, a pre-school and a spiritual bathing area known as a mikvah.
The Chabad center will be an additional facility to the local Chabad House, which has outgrown its current location at East 65th Street and Strickland Avenue.
The ceremony was attended by Harav Ahron Yaakov Shvei, the Mara Deasra of Crown Heights.
