Next month, the future of a controversial residential building will be decided.
A court hearing will be held to determine the fate of the unfinished six-story condominium at 2232 Kimball Street.
“There’s a court hearing on October 20th that will determine when they have to bring the building down and what kind of restitution will be made,” Marine Park Civic Association President Greg Borruso announced at the group’s meeting last week.
The building has sat in disarray since April 2006 when the city Department of Buildings (DOB) issued a stop-work order and revoked the building permit. The permit was revoked because the developer proceeded with a six-story structure in spite of zoning regulations prohibiting such a tall building.
Later that year, the developer submitted new plans to DOB, which abided by the neighborhood’s zoning. At that point, the stop-work order was lifted so the developer could remove the sixth floor.
Now it’s three years later and the top floor remains on the building.
This past June, DOB issued another violation to take the building owner to criminal court. An application was immediately filed on behalf of the owners to remove the sixth floor. However, the demolition was never done.
Marine Park residents are tired of seeing the “eyesore” in their neighborhood and want it gone now.
“There’s been a stop-work order on that for years,” Borruso said.
The Kimball Street building is just one of many new structures being left incomplete as developers run out of money because of the faltering economy.
Spurned by the Kimball Street project, the Marine Park Civic has taken a closer look at new development projects in the community.
Last year, the civic formed a Construction and Zoning Committee to play watchdog to the various construction projects underway in the area.
