The Brooklyn motorcyclist left brain-dead after a hit-and-run accident earlier this month was removed from life support and died last Wednesday. The police are no closer to finding the killer.
Monica Henk, a 26-year-old tattoo artist, was driving her motorcycle through the intersection of Flushing and Kent avenues in Clinton Hill on April 8 when a black SUV slammed into her and kept on moving, said police.
A CAT scan confirmed extensive brain damage, internal bleeding, and destruction of significant portions of the spinal cord, according to her husband, Dan Henk. She was being kept alive by a respirator.
As we went to press last week, Dan Henk was insisting that his wife would not have wanted to be kept alive. After a few hours of confusion, Woodhull Hospital consented to the husband and other family members’ request to remove Monica from life support. She died shortly thereafter.
Henk, originally from Colombia, also modeled for body art magazines and was a musician. She is believed to have been heading home to Bedford-Stuyvesant to feed her dog before heading to class at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in Park Slope when the accident occurred.
The family has hired a private investigator to find the driver of the SUV, which police believe is a 1995–97 black Chevy S-10 Blazer that’s missing its front bumper and one of its headlights. The family has posted a $20,000 reward for any information leading to the driver’s arrest. Anyone with a tip is asked to call the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline at (800) 577-TIPS.
