Representatives from nearly 20 borough Jewish organizations thanked Rep. Anthony Weiner last week for getting them Department of Homeland Security grants.
The Urban Area Security Initiative (USAI) Nonprofit Security Grant Program is open to all non−profit, charitable and religious organizations, including hospitals, museums and houses of worship.
The competitive program provides up to $75,000 for such security measures as cameras, bulletproof glass and barriers as well as other equipment.
At Weiner’s press conference, held at the Bnos Yisroel School for Girls, one of the recipients, in Midwood, the congressman noted how federal authorities, working with the NYPD, recently arrested four men who were planning to bomb the Riverdale Temple and the Riverdale Jewish Center.
“As the planned attacks in the Bronx highlight, non−profit and religious institutions are at−risk and need protection,” said Weiner, who co−sponsored the legislation creating the grants in the House Judiciary Committee in 2004.
