It took Braven Brewing Company two years and some serious fund-raising to bottle its first beer, a light India pale ale called Braven White. So how does it taste? The thirsty staff of The Brooklyn Paper took a break from reporting the day’s news to swirl the beer around on our sophisticated palates and brew up some hard-hitting hops criticism. Click through the slideshow above to see what we came up with.

NOAH HUROWITZ, REPORTER: “It is a bit like your uncle’s homebrew. You can feel pretty good for making it in your house, but it falls flat. The biggest drawback is the bitter finish.”

DANIELLE FURFARO, REPORTER: “It is drinkable. It is nothing too unique, which is probably what they are going for if they want to sell a lot of beer.”

BILL EGBERT, NEWS EDITOR: “It tastes a bit soapy.”

NATHAN TEMPEY, NEWS EDITOR: “I try to avoid white beers, but this is pretty palatable to me. I like to imagine that the sun is shining down on me and it is quenching my thirst.”

VANESSA OGLE, REPORTER: “It is better than” the coffee-pumpkin beer we tried back in October. (Vanessa is not a big beer fan.)

RUTH BROWN, ARTS EDITOR: “It has a lingering bitter finish. It is decent for a white beer. It would be good for sitting on a porch and it would be good with spicy food.” (Ruth used to be a beer critic. Before that she was a coffee journalist. She has a new book out called “Coffee Nerd” that is your definitive guide to high-end coffee, and for which this is a press photo.)
