Bay Ridge may soon be home to a food co-op.
A group of local residents is now working to open a food co-op, which “hundreds of people” have expressed interest in joining.
“We’re an enthusiastic and – let’s not be shy here – friendly group of people who have gathered together to help make the Bay Ridge Food Co-op a reality,” the team writes on www.foodcoopbayridge.com. “We’re just normal people from Bay Ridge and the surrounding area who’d like to be able to buy high quality wholesome food at low prices.”
The group has been holding regular planning meetings, preparing marketing plans and engaging in community outreach by participating in popular events like the Third Avenue Festival and St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Progress on the store’s opening is moving slowly but surely.
According to the team behind the co-op, “We’d like to say that the store is opening next week, but these things take a little bit of time sadly. Thankfully, we’ve gathered together an amazing group of people, all of whom are doing a remarkable job of beginning to get all the necessary pieces in place.”
These folks are currently applying for grants and preparing to launch a membership drive.
“The more people we can get on board, the better,” the team says.
Brooklyn is already home to successful food co-ops.
The Flatbush Food Coop, 1415 Cortelyou Road, offers memberships but allows anyone to shop.
The Park Slope Food Co-op, 782 Union Street, requires members to work in the store in exchange for buying goods. The Park Slope shop has attracted celebrities like Adrian Grenier, star of HBO’s hit show “Entourage,” who was spotted breaking down cardboard boxes last month.
We’ll have to wait and see what famous faces work the cash register at the Bay Ridge Food Co-op.
