They’re the 21st century’s Bonnie and Clyde.
But this time, Bonnie’s a big gal.
Police said that the unidentified couple work together when they target their victims.
They then launch their weapon – big Bonnie.
Victims have told police that the woman bum-rushes their victims, knocking them off their feet.
The male suspect – who is somewhat slimmer — swoops in to pick up the victim’s purse and property, cops have been told.
While some of the victims had been knocked off their feet, no serious injuries have been reported.
Officials said that the thieves are responsible for at least five robberies in the Marine Park area alone, but Inspector Frank Cangiarella, the commanding officer of the 63rd Precinct, said that the thieves may have already moved on.
“We took five of these crimes last week, but we haven’t taken any this week,” Cangiarella told members of the 63rd Precinct Community Council during their monthly meeting on September 24. “We’ve put extra resources in the area, so we may have displaced them.”
Representatives from the Marine Park Civic Association attending the council meeting said that they had heard that two of the muggings took place on September 16, on Avenue T and East 32nd Street and East 34th Street between Avenue R and Quentin Road.
Cangiarella said that the pattern was established the same week as those robberies.
Other robberies in the pattern took place around Fillmore Avenue and Avenue U and East 58th Street in Mill Basin, Cangiarella said.
“After the first night, we re-allocated our people to handle the problem,” Cangiarella said. “Very few crimes happen in these areas, so they jumped off the page.”
Since none had taken place the week of the meeting, Cangiarella said he was fairly confident the thieves have moved on.
“They may also have been arrested somewhere else,” he said.
According to recent NYPD CompStat figures, robberies in the 63rd Precinct are up by just one percent for the year – from 179 in 2007 to 181 this year.
During the week that Bonnie and Clyde came to town, 11 robberies had taken place in the 63rd Precinct, which includes Marine Park and Mill Basin, as well as Flatlands, Georgetowne, Mill Island and Bergen Beach.
CompStat figures show that the crime reduction has been in car thefts, which fell by 16 percent over the last year.
Overall felony crime in the precinct was down by three percent, Cangiarella said.
“That’s a reduction of 36 major crimes for the year,” he explained, adding that over the last 15 years, ever since the NYPD began using the CompStat system to measure crime trends, felony crime in the 63rd Precinct has dropped by 72 percent.
“Of course, one crime is one too many,” he said. “Our goal is to reduce crime to the lowest numbers possible.”
