After nearly a year of complaints, the MTA will repair a Windsor Terrace subway station that, in cold weather, resembles the ice castle of a snow queen.
But the Church Avenue stop on the F line is no fairy tale. According to Windsor Terrace resident Cynthia Magnus, it was a disaster waiting to happen.
“The other day when it was freezing, there were stalactites hanging from the ceiling,” said Magnus.
“I called the MTA about it five times, but you can never get through to anyone, and they never call you back. It’s a very hazardous condition.”
But MTA New York City Transit told The Stoop that it has taken notice. Last Wednesday, the agency blocked off three of the five staircases in the station — one at the Albemarle Street exit, the other two at the Church Avenue exit.
At the Albemarle staircase, one sign said the work would be completed by the fall, while another sign said the work would be done by April 14.
“We are in contact with the Department of Environmental Protection, and that they will work together to try to resolve it as soon as possible,” said Deirdre Parker, a spokeswoman.
But like that old Catskills joke — “the food here is horrible! And such small portions!” — the agency couldn’t win with Magnus, despite the repairs.
“Now it’s going to be shut down until September,” she said. “This is just inconvenient.”
